Just a few days ago, we wrote about Harrah’s Entertainment getting into the online casino business, launching Caesars Casino Online with all the kick-ass casino games you could ever want: online poker, online blackjack, online slots, online everything. There’s only one online problem. Ain’t no online gamblers from online America.
Nope, nothing weird about that, keep moving along, nothing to see here. Ok, so maybe there is something weird about that. Let me repeat: THIS IS AN AMERICAN ONLINE CASINO WHICH DOESN’T HAVE ANY AMERICAN ONLINE GAMBLING CUSTOMERS! WTF!?
It’s that stinking Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), passed by the United States Congress during George W. Bush’s presidency, as part of the Safe Port Act. Not sure how making our ports more safe has anything to do with keeping a 20 year-old college student from being able to win a couple of dollars in online blackjack, but that’s what it’s done.
In the meantime, Harrah’s is setting up shop in preparation for the laws to change. With its huge offline brand, it will surely be one of the biggest online casino sites around….as soon as the laws change. Especially since most brick-and-mortar casinos are twiddling their thumbs, doing nothing with the current laws in existence.
I mean, seriously, would this ever happen in another industry? Can you imagine American Airlines not having any American customers buy airline tickets online? Or even better, an American pornography site not having any American customers…..umm…like, using their site or whatever? Wouldn’t happen. Ever ever ever.
Let’s get with the program, USA. Repeal those laws and let American enjoy the freedoms of apple pie, baseball, and online gambling.
